Essentials of a Balanced Career Counseling Paradigm:                         If you don't know where you're going, any road will take you there.

Bret Burkholder, MA

About the workshop

Since therapists and counselors are the primary professional contacts available to clients who can act as a resource for career exploration, it makes sense that they have exposure to what a real and effective career planning model looks like.

In this presentation, Bret will share his developmental paradigm of the career planning process.  Developed over a twenty-eight year professional career counselor career, both in four year and community college settings, as well as in private practice, hundreds of people have found great success following this sensible and respectful career planning model.

Employing cognitive, reflective and appreciative techniques, participants will be exposed to the essential inter-related steps necessary in conducting successful career planning. Specific attention will be paid to various techniques and resouces meant to engage and support clients and ourselves in promoting self awareness.

Attendees will:

  • Learn the essentials of conducting healthy and client-centered career counseling
  • Demonstrate techniques and tools to assist clients in exploring their interests, transferable skills, values and much more
  • Engage in myth popping: challenging the fantasies often held about healthy career planning and replacing them with tried and proven techniques that enhance and support a successful career plan/path
  • Master a system of prioritization and decision making
  • Learn specific techniques of networking and informational interviewing
  • Participate in the administering, interpretation and accurate application of the Self Directed Search Personality/Interest Inventory.
