A Therapist Guide to Working with Asian/Pacific Islander Clients

About the workshop

This workshop will increase awareness and familiarity with the Asian/Pacific Islander (API) population.  Participants will learn how to build rapport with Asian clients and appropriate assessment skills.  Case vignettes will make this workshop interactive and provide therapy dos and don'ts.  The goal of this workshop is to start a dialogue on culturally appropriate therapy techniques and provide some hands-on ideas for applying the knowledge to your work with API clients. 

Workshop Objectives:


*Increasing awareness of cultural differences in the API client.

*Learn how to make an appropriate assessment of your API client.

*Examine therapeutic techniques that work with the API client.

About the presenter

Dipti Sarnaik, MA, LMFT , is an ethnic minority mental health specialist (Asian/Pacific Islander) and child mental health specialist with over 18 years of clinical experience.  Currently she is the Clinical Program Director for Renton Area Youth and Family Services.

Dipti is trilingual.  She can read, speak and write English, Hindi and Marthi (native Indian Language).  She received a Masters Degree in Clinical Psychology from the University of Bombay, India in 1990.  She completed a post Masters Program in Marriage and Family Therapy in 1994.
